Willy Morgan and the Curse of Bone Town

A mysterious letter has arrived. It’s been ten years that your father has been missing, ten long years. One morning he was there, and the next day you woke up to find him missing. He was never seen again. Your father was an archaeologist that was constantly travelling for work, but this last trip was different. Ever since his disappearance you’ve been waiting for news, any news, so when it finally arrives you can’t ignore it. You have to go and try to find him.

Willy Morgan and the Curse of Bone Town is a point & click adventure game developed by Imaginarylab. This adventure game is reminiscent of the old classics from LucasArts and some of the earlier Sierra games. Despite the nostalgic vibe, this game has a very modern look with its 3D graphics and cinematographic sequences. It is not surprising coming from a team like Imaginarylab. Ciro Camera, the mind behind the studio comes from a background in 3D graphics, modelling, rendering and video creation.

The protagonist of the game is Willy Morgan. He is a resourceful boy who lost his father Henry Morgan, a famous archaeologist, many years ago. Willy is enjoying his summer’s vacation and relaxing at home. Today the postman brought a portentous letter to him. Ten years ago just before his disappearance, Henry Morgan wrote his son a letter that is just surfacing. This fateful letter contains one important message: Willy must finish his father’s mission. Most importantly, his dad warns him that he cannot trust anyone. To complete this mission he’ll have to travel to Bone Town, a contemporary pirate town. He has no idea what is waiting for him, but his father needs him. He embarks on his bike and leaves on an unexpected adventure. Once in Bone Town, he has to retrace his father’s last steps and solve the mystery of his disappearance.

The game is centered on the enigmatic circumstances surrounding Henry Morgan’s untimely disappearance. You have to explore the town and find clues to elucidate the mystery. The map is not huge, but it’s condensed. Every single corner is packed. With over 50 locations and 15 different characters there’s a lot to see and do in this game. I loved the fact that it’s all packed in a smaller map because it meant that I didn’t waste time walking around for long distance. Each of the characters has broad branching dialogue trees. I found the dialogue well-written and I liked the infusion of humour in not only the dialogue, but also the descriptions. I was impressed by the thought behind each location. Each one has its own concept and style while keeping a unifying thread to them all.

The artwork is outstanding. It’s definitely this game’s best feature and it’s where the developers’ talent shine the most. Visually it’s very reminiscent to the original Monkey Island series, but in a more contemporary style. The cinematographics and 3D graphics adeptly modernize this classic style. The animations are skillfully created and are worthy of a cartoon you would see on a TV show. It helps give the game a more polished look. The music in general is okay. The only complaint I have is that in the game’s first part it can get quite repetitive. I even had to turn down the volume at some points, however in the second half it greatly improved and got more varied. All of the dialogues are voice-over, it’s another detail that helps the game feel more complete.

The puzzles are well integrated with the story and the developer managed to keep the game flowing throughout. They’re challenging without being too hard, and I never became stuck with any of the puzzles. They are for the most part logical, so with a bit of reasoning you can come up with the solution without any outside help. There’s a good variety, and they are always pertinent to the story. Most importantly they are fun to solve. There’s a bit of back and forth as in most point & click game, but you can use the map for quick travel so it’s never a chore.

Willy Morgan and the Curse of Bone Town is an outstanding first game from Imaginarylab. I was thoroughly impressed by how polished it is. It’s a well rounded game and it was a pleasure to play it. It captures the essence of a classic point & click game with modernized artwork. If you love classic point & click adventure games, mystery and fun quirky dialogue, you should definitely give Willy Morgan a try.
